Concert Photography - Photographing Elvis

I started working last month at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson as the e-commerce manager. One of the perks of the job is I’m now sort of the official photographer for events going on at Destination Daytona , which is like a motorcycle theme park. They have multiple shops/dealers, places to eat and soon a large area for concerts and events called the “Coke Pavillion”.

Anyways… so shortly after I started there (like 3 days after) they had an Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. 13 Elvis’s (or is that Elvi) competing for a shot to go to the finals at Graceland in Memphis, TN.

I got to shoot it! It was great! I got in behind the scenes before the event and then got to shoot upfront anywhere I wanted… even on the stage! I got to hang out with some of the local media photogs too.

I used work’s Nikon D50. Nice little camera. I remember testing one out when they first came out. Responsive, colorful, and shot well in low light/concert lighting. I had a 55-200mm, 18-55mm and a 20mm prime. I shot mostly with the 55-200 to get tight shots of the singers wailing away. I had my personal camera with, but didnt take it out at all, as the Nikon performed wonderfully.

Yeah… that D50 made me seriously want a Nikon and if I had the opportunity, definitely would switch. After shooting more with a newer camera with more mega-pixels and a newer sensor… the old d30 is starting to not hold its own. And with the stock photography opportunity moving forward, I will definitely need to upgrade.

Now… I have to start crunching numbers and adjusting the budget to save up for a new camera :)
